Censorship, and advertisements

We have satellite tv in the flat, and so (those who know me know I have watched little tv for the last few years) I have been drawn to it like a moth to a flame, if the flame is made of sweet sweet pap.

TV is censored – so in the climactic scene in A Few Good Men where Tom Cruise informs Jack Nicholson that he is ‘under arrest, you [male offspring of a female dog]’, the audio was simply ‘you’re under arrest, you…..’. However, in the Simpsons, Homer is able to talk about how his chair caresses his buttocks, but ‘ass’ is censored in the same dialogue.  Nevertheless, they allow the Kardashians.

Edited to update: ‘PMS’ was also censored from the Big Bang Theory!

I’ve also been watching the (generally insanely catchy) Indian advertisements.

I defy you not to be humming along pretty quickly to this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIuGHTAwi1g

  1. When we lived in Brunei (maybe 1993?), I had already seen the first series of Beverly Hills 90210 before I left. So when it aired in Brunei for the first time, I could see they had cut out the scene where Brenda asks Dylan to have an AIDS test before she will “you know”….

    • Between the censorship and the subtitles (which don’t always quite sync up), watching tv can be a bit disjointed. They do air Sex and the City, which is quite dull when the only parts without much censorship are Carrie’s ruminative monologues.
